UNHCR Acknowledges Church of Uganda’s Humanitarian Support to Nakivale Refugee Settlement
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has extended its heartfelt appreciation to the Church of Uganda for its remarkable humanitarian support to refugees in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District. The Church's efforts, which included providing clothes, hygiene kits, tarpaulins, and a medical camp, have been recognized as essential to the UNHCR's response during a time of limited resources.
In a letter signed by UNHCR Representative in Uganda, Mr. Matthew Crentsil, the organization praised the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, for the Church's timely and generous response to the emergency influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The letter highlighted the Church's contribution to restoring dignity to those displaced by conflict and crisis.
The Church of Uganda's Provincial Treasurer, Mr. Balaam Muheebwa, welcomed the recognition and reiterated the Church's commitment to responding to the needs of the vulnerable. "Church of Uganda follows the mission of Jesus Christ; to preach, to heal, to treat, and to feed the hungry. This appeal is part of our Gospel witness in action, and we remain committed to serving those in need," Mr. Muheebwa said.
The recognition comes as partners under the ACT Alliance Appeal for Refugees from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania gather in Mbarara for a benchmarking visit to Nakivale Refugee Settlement. The week-long visit aims to learn best practices in Uganda's management of the regional refugee crisis. Church of Uganda is actively providing psychosocial support, promoting peaceful coexistence between refugees and the host community, and preventing gender-based violence.
