Ethiopians Celebrate Completion Of Africa’s Biggest Dam

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s biggest hydroelectric project, is now complete and will be inaugurated on September 9th, 2025. Ethiopians in Uganda joined their embassy in Kampala to celebrate this historic milestone.

At the Residence of the Ethiopian Ambassador in Uganda, the mood was celebratory as Ethiopians in the diaspora gathered to mark the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Loverde Masu, the Head of Political Affairs at the Embassy, commended the Ethiopian diaspora for their contribution to the construction of the dam, saying it represents a strong commitment not only to Ethiopia’s economic development but also to regional economic integration.

Mohammed Sulaiman emphasized the significance of the GERD as the first and largest dam of its kind in Africa. He noted that its construction was fully funded and executed by Ethiopians, both at home and abroad, without external assistance.

The $4.8 billion project, located on the Blue Nile, began in 2011 to address Ethiopia’s chronic power shortages.

Currently, more than 60 percent of Ethiopians live without electricity and depend heavily on firewood. Once fully operational, the dam will provide sustainable electricity, transform lives, and reinforce Ethiopia’s vision of self-reliance.

Just as Ethiopia once led Africa in the fight against colonialism, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam stands as a modern symbol of African determination, resilience, and achievement.
