KCCA Street Cleaners Protest Over Delayed Payments

KCCA Street Cleaners Protest Over Delayed Payments

Street cleaners who are casual employees of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have gone on strike, protesting delayed payments of their wages and what they call unfair dismissals from their jobs.

The aggrieved laborers put their grievances to the Central Division Mayor Salim Uhuru and later also petitioned the Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Minsa Kabanda. She reassured them that their grievances would be addressed.

The aggrieved street cleaners first went to the office of the Mayor of Central Division, Salim Uhuru, complaining about delayed payment of their salaries and unfair dismissal from their jobs.

The street cleaners threw garbage on the streets to express their dissatisfaction with KCCA

They later moved to the KCCA headquarters at City Hall to meet the KCCA's top leadership. The police tried to deny them access to the premises in vain.

The Central Division Mayor, Salim Uhuru, engaged the guards and later allowed the group into City Hall.

The street cleaners claim to have sent their complaints to KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka but they have not been helped.

However, at City Hall, the Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, addressed the cleaners and said she was not aware of their dismissals

Minister Kabanda gave them assurance that their issues will be addressed, adding that if any of them was unfairly dismissed, they would be reinstated.

KCCA employs over more than 1,000 people in various casual jobs across the city.
