Rukiga District Council Officially Dissolved Ahead of New Term: Speaker Akampurira Praises Unity and Professionalism in Outgoing Council. Only Six Out Of 19 Councillors Return for Next Leader
The Speaker of Rukiga District Council, Oscar Akampurira, has officially dissolved the district council following its final sitting at the district headquarters, bringing the 2021–2026 council term to a close as the district prepares for a new phase of leadership.
The final council sitting marked the end of five years of leadership, debate, and district oversight by the outgoing Rukiga District Council.
Addressing councillors during the session, Speaker Oscar Akampurira commended members for maintaining peace, cooperation, and professionalism throughout their term of office.
He noted that under his leadership, all councillors were given equal opportunity to participate in discussions and decision-making processes.
Akampurira also appreciated the resident district commissioner for the continued support offered to the council and praised outgoing district chairperson Robert Mbabazi for guiding the district through what he described as a stable and progressive leadership period.
In his farewell remarks, District Chairperson Robert Mbabazi thanked councillors, the chief administrative officer, heads of departments, and the technical staff for their cooperation since he assumed office in May 2021.
Mbabazi, however, acknowledged several challenges still facing the district, including poor physical planning in town councils, unemployment, and limited funding for district programs and services.
Speaking on behalf of the councillors, Godfrey Mukulu of Muhanga Town Council said leaders had remained committed to advocating for the welfare and development of the people of Rukiga throughout their term.
Mukulu thanked fellow councillors for their dedication and urged them to remain united and continue supporting the development of the district even outside council chambers.
Out of the 19 councillors who served in the outgoing council, only six are expected to retain their seats in the next term. They include Oscar Akampurira, Beatrice Asiimwe, Elly Ampumuza, Joseph Besigye, Ahmed Bedi, and Jackline Nkamushaba.
The transition marks a significant leadership shift as Rukiga District prepares for a new council term.
