Speaker Among Officially Declares Assets To IGG
The speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Annet Anita Among has officially submitted her declaration of income, assets, and liabilities to the Inspectorate of Government, being among the 37% of public workers said to have complied to the mandatory exercise so far.
The Leadership Code Act, 2002 seeks to promote transparency and accountability among public officials while preventing corruption and reinforcing good governance.
In accordance with the Leadership Code Act, 2002 which mandates all public officers to declare their income, assets, and liabilities, the speaker of parliament Annet Anita Among has officially declared hers to the Inspectorate of Government.
The speaker also received the declarations from the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and her two deputies: Dr. Patricia Achan and Mrs. Anne Muhairwe.
During the last declaration period in 2023, the IGG’s office recorded a submission from 90% public workers with over 100 officers pursued and sent to leadership court tribunal for failing to comply.
Responding to the media’s concerns on whether the declaration exercise is adequate in assessing one’s lifestyle and meeting its objectives, IGG Betty Kamya noted that they are using the assets verification process to meet their intended goals.
During the meeting, it was revealed that as of today morning, 37% of the public officers had declared their possessions. The speaker called on the other officers to follow suit and ensure they fulfill their responsibilities as the exercise aims to promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in governance.
Among also reassured the IGG’s office of parliament’s dedication to extending support to aid the inspectorate’s work.
This mandatory income, assets, and liabilities biennial declaration exercise targeting public workers is expected to close on 31st of March, 2025 at midnight.
