Chair Of Parliamentary Forum On Road Safety On Accidents

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Forum on Road Safety, Alex Ruhunda, says they are designing campaigns to curb rampant road accidents.

Ruhunda, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Central Division in Fort Portal City says road safety campaigns should be taken to all parts of the country to raise awareness against road accidents.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Forum on Road Safety, Alex Ruhunda presided over the launch of the Super Boda Boda in Fort Portal city. The innovation will allow people to get boda boda via a mobile phone-based app. Ruhunda was concerned that boda boda crashes constitute the majority of road traffic accidents in Uganda.

According to the Traffic Police report of November 2022, 1,021 boda boda riders were killed between January and September 2021 in various accidents on Ugandan roads. This means at least four boda-boda riders and/or their passengers were killed every month for nine months.

The 1,021 boda boda deaths in nine months are not too far off from the 1918 people killed in the whole year, according to the 2021 Annual Police Crime and Traffic/Road Safety report 2021.
The Super Boda Boda app launched in Fort Portal tourism city is expected to help in digitizing the tourism city. Ruhunda, who is a road safety advocate, expects that the new app will help in checking accidents that are common among boda boda riders.

The chairperson of Fort Portal Boda Boda Association, Edward Rugumayo, praised the innovators for coming up with the new mode of digitizing the boda boda industry saying this will help in curbing crimes that have been committed against boda boda riders and their passengers.
